Lizzo did the damn thing during her VMA performance last night (8/26/2019). To see black women, fat black women, fat black women with fros & braids dancing and giving life on stage is something I’ve never seen on an MTV stage before. Her entire performance was a dream.
I’ll admit, I didn’t know 1/2 the people that showed their faces at the VMA’s, I’m of the Brittney Spears kissing Madonna era of the VMA’s, so I didn’t know what to expect. I tuned in to see Missy Elliot FINALLY get her just due and to see Lizzo F ish up on stage. Homegirl did not disappoint.
Lizzo’s VMA performance was energy from start to finish. Seeing different sizes of bodies killing the choreography had me screaming at my television. The collection of black women on stage vibing out and sweating out their roots together, had me hyped on a different level.
I’ve kept close attention to Lizzo’s performances over the last few months and every time she’s on stage, she brings a party. Whether or not you’re into her music, you’re inevitably sucked into her energy. From her vocals to her outfits, to her dancers, to the stage set, you’re drawn in. She always has little moments that make you love her more with each performance; like drinking out of a bedazzled Patron bottle
I love that Lizzo makes a point to be unapologetic in who she is as a singer, a musician, a woman, a fat woman, and a fat black woman. I love that she brings other black women along with her to give them a stage to perform. For me, it’s impossible to sit still when she is on stage and there are very fee performers and artist out right now that gets me moving like Ms. LIZZO.
Tell me what you thought of Lizzo VMA performance! See you in my next post.
