Model Spotlight; Alex LaRosa

Hey Loves,
We have been on a roll these last couple months with some amazing women as the Model Spotlight. And this month is no different. This young woman I’m sure you’ve seen so many places. She has a golden smile, and hair that jsut gives nothing but life. This month’s Model Spotlight Alex LaRosa.

Name: Alex LaRosa
Age: 22
Clothing Size: 16/18
Agency (if applicable):
Blog name (if applicable):

What made you want to become a model? When I
was in high school, I would shop online a lot! I would always look at the
women modeling online for these plus size companies! I thought it was so
cool that these women were my size and considered models! I began to think
that if they were able to be models, couldn’t I be a model too? I ended up
sending in my pictures to Torrid and the rest is history

What are some of the brands that you have
worked with?
I started off modeling for Torrid. I have walked the runway
for Ashley Stewart, Purple Diva Designs, Curvzz, 12oh!1 Designs, Nakimuli
Inc., T-Tyme Lady Couture, and True Diva Designs! And I currently have
campaigns out with Swak Designs, ModCloth, Chic and Curvy Boutique, and A
Clothes Mind!

How long have you been working? I started
modeling in 2009, so 4 years!

So many girls want to become a model what
advice would give them? What should they expect?
I think people often
underestimate how much work is required to be model! I know I did at
first! If you are serious about becoming a plus model expect to sacrifice
a lot of time, effort, and money; but know that I don’t regret it for a
minute! I love what I do and I think that is so important! If you are an
aspiring model, you must really enjoy every aspect of the business, work
hard, and never take an opportunity for granted!

A common misconception is that plus
size/curvy/thick models live unhealthy life styles. What do you say to
people who think like that?
I always try to remind people that size is not
an indicator of health! Healthy doesn’t look any specific way! Just by
looking at my size 16 self, you cannot know that I play football with the
kids I volunteer with each week or that I can run a mile just fine.

Was this your dream career? How did you get to
this point in your career?
I have had so many dream careers haha! From
ages 5 to 15, I wanted to be a vet, a marine biologist, a power ranger, a
motivational speaker, Beyonce, etc… So I wouldn’t say that modeling was
my dream career from a young age, but I have always wanted be someone who
helps others! I have found that modeling has allowed me to do that!
Building my modeling career has helped me learn how to truly love myself
and how to help others love and accept themselves too!

If you could be doing anything else other than
modeling, what would it be?
I’m currently in school majoring in Critical
Theory and Social Justice with an emphasis in Racial Justice. Although there
has been tons of progress, this country is still not a post-racial
society. As I continue to build my modeling career, I plan on organizing
conferences about around current racial justice issues and possible
solutions for junior high and high school students.

Where do you get your confidence from? How do
you stay in a positive frame of mind?
I have gained a tremendous amount of
confidence by reevaluated and adjusting who I hang out with! I definitely
feed off of all of the incredibly strong, smart, bold, confident, and
bad ass women that I have the pleasure of calling friends! I have
surrounded myself who only take me higher and who genuinely have my best
interest in mind!

Why do you think it so important for plus
size/curvy/thick models to have the same respect as straight size models?

Unfortunately, this society thinks that skinny is ideal and better than
plus size. However, the average person in the United States is a size 14.
Respecting plus size models as much as standard size models tells this society
that all sizes are beautiful and acceptable. This is a huge deal in
generating a culture that teaches people how to love themselves and that
is what is really most important

So many girls grow with such low self esteem.
Were you ever like that?
If so what advice would you give young girls
struggling with her self esteem? For years I thought that I was too big to
ever feel pretty or elegant. I felt that my body was a huge waste of space
that I should absolutely be ashamed of. And I was. I abused my body daily
with hateful thoughts and a 3 year battle with an eating disorder. Fast
forward to today and I am the happiest with my body than I ever have been
before. I have learned to love and value my body not because of a number
on a scale or the way in which people respond to it, but I love and value
my body simply because I am inside it! I love and appreciate every inch of
my size 16 self. If you are struggling with self esteem issues, I would
again emphasize the importance of have a solid group of women around you
who value you! I would also say 5 things that I love about myself in the
mirror each morning! Whether its physical attributes or personality
traits, there ARE great things about you! Learn how to acknowledge those
The last couple questions are just to have fun with….
Hagen Daz or Ben & Jerry? Ben & Jerry for sure!
Favorite tv show growing up? Boy Meets World, That’s So Raven, Psych!
Favorite Halloween costume? One year I was a Ninja Turtle! Haha, that is still the coolest costume I’ve ever worn!
Louis Vitton or Hermes? I’m a shoe addict, so I’m going to have to go with Louis Vitton!
Buying your boyfriend his favorite video game or those new pair of shoes? I’d have to say video game because I’ll get to play that too! We can’t share a pair of shoes haha!
There you have it loves. Check her out and show her some love. Stay tuned for next month.

From a Dress to a Skirt

Hey Loves,

1st off, Happy Father’s day to all the the dads out there. This post was a combination of bordem gone wrong and blogger inspiration. The other day, one of my favorite plus size bloggers Chasity of GarnerStyle, showed how she versatile one skirt can be. If you have seen it, check it out here.

But anyway, I bought this dress from Strawberry sometime in February and only wore it once. I actually forgot I had it cause, I couldn’t find it. (story of my life) But today as I was laying around I threw it on, and started thinking of different ways in can be worn. So off I went on my dressing up adventure lol  Below are the quick simply outfits I came up with.

Casual Sunday
Dress: Strawberry
Belt: Lane Bryant
Wedges: Target
Bag: Call it Spring

Ms. Sassy
Skirt: Strawberry

Office Cutie
Dress: Strawberry
Blazer: Lord & Taylor (old)
Shoes: Anne Klien

Thank you to Chasity for the inspiration. And for my loves that are on a budget, this is a great way to have multiple outfits just from one clothing item. You know how I do…now twirl honey lol

Until nest time loves

Model Spotlight; Liris Crosse

Hey loves, So it is that time for another Model Spotlight. This young lady, should not be a stranger to you. If she is, please get your life lol But no seriously I am very excited to have the opportunity to feature her. This young woman is pioneer in the plus model industry and a true trail blazer in this throat industry. And clearly she is doing something right. She has been in multiple campaigns representing the full figured curvy women of the world. So with out further delay, lets meet this months Model Spotlight Ms. Liris Crosse

Name: Liris Crosse
Clothing Size: 14
Agency (if applicable): Dorothy Combs Models
Blog name (if applicable):
made you want to become a model?
  I loved
taking pictures & walking runway since I was a little girl!  People always told me I was photogenic. I
also looked up to Tyra Banks & Naomi Campbell growing up so I wanted to be
a model diva like them. It looked like fun!
are some of the brands that you have worked with?
Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewart
(recently appeared in their spring in-store campaign), Target, Qristyl Frazier,
Monif C., Loop 18, Vogue, Essence, the list goes on & on!
long have you been working?
Over a decade, I’m definitely a veteran in the
game! Many call me a pioneer so I’m blessed to have made my mark!
many girls want to become a model what advice would give them? What should they
Expect more NO’s than Yes. This industry is not for the weak hearted
since you deal with a lot of rejection. It takes most models awhile to get
started, sometimes even years & you must INVEST in great shoots,
maintenance & quality marketing materials. Gotta spend money to make money
or you don’t need to do this. My best advice would be “Less is more”.  Go to agency open calls with simple, pretty
hair, makeup & clothes. Agents like to see what they can transform you into!
common misconception is that plus size/curvy/thick models live unhealthy life
styles. What do you say to people who think like that?
Not true, we just happen
to be NORMAL & carry more weight. Most plus size models, I know work out or
are really active. I think we all try to eat what we want but in moderation. We
just don’t starve ourselves. I know I don’t!
this your dream career? How did you get to this point in your career?
Yes this
was my dream & I must say I’m blessed to still be living it!!! I got this
far from hard work, reinvention, networking, my parents’ prayers & God’s
you could be doing anything else other than modeling, what would it be?
which I also do already but I’d like to do it at a higher level. I also would
love to own a bar/lounge, a full service salon & a clothing boutique. I
love food & fashion LOL!
do you get your confidence from? How do you stay in a positive frame of mind?
get it from my parents’ instilling in me greatness at a very young age. I also
get my confidence from going through trials because they make you stronger once
you conquer them. I stay in a positive frame of mind because my dad is one of
the most positive people I know. He has always been inspirational & a big
dreamer. I definitely take after him in that aspect. Also I know that my words
& thoughts are spirits so I only like to think or speak positivity.
do you think it so important for plus size/curvy/thick models to have the same
respect as straight size models?
Its important because we represent the main
group of women in the world. Most women aren’t a size 2 or 4 plus most of us
lead a healthy lifestyle. We work just as hard as straight size models but with
fewer opportunities or respect. We deserve a lot more than what we’ve been
getting. We shouldn’t be treated as a novelty like many designers or magazines
many girls grow with such low self esteem. Were you ever like that? If so what
advice would you give young girls struggling with her self esteem?
I pretty
much grew up with a good self esteem although there was a period where I
struggled in who I was. What brought me around was my faith in God & truly
starting to take the time to learn who I am & what I bring to the world
daily. I would say read great books, travel & meet new people, try things
you never did before to stretch your personal growth & find YOURSELF!  Then be the BEST you there is!
The last couple questions are just
to have fun with….
1.       Haagen
Dazs or Ben & Jerry? Haagen Dazs
2.       Favorite
tv show growing up? The Cosby Show
3.       Favorite
Halloween costume? When I was Beyonce in the “Kitty Kat” video 🙂
4.       Louis
Vuitton or Hermes? LV
5.       Buying
your boyfriend his favorite video game or those new pair of shoes? Shoes, I
don’t care for video games lol
So there you have it loves. Ms. Liris Crosse is one woman, that has pushed her way through this industry. And we have seen just how much she has come alive in front of the camera. So the next time you walk past an Ashley Stewart store and you see her face, be sure to give her 2 snaps and a twirl lol
Until next time loves.

By Any Means All Black

Hey loves, so I’m kind of excited to do this post for two reasons! 1. because it’s my 1st collab and with the beautiful and
fashionable Kim of Naturally Fashionable! EEEEEEEK!!!  2nd, because I think this
something that I will do every year. Today (February 21st)
marked the 48th anniversary of the assassination of Malcolm X. So to
honor the day, I wore all black. You may remember I did the same thing last
year. If not, then check it out here.
So I know some of you are like “why in the world did she do
this” well historically Malcolm X may have been a little rough around the edges, and maybe could have chosen his words better most of the time, and yes he did play by his own rules, but this man still found a way to move a nation of people, both Islamic and non Islamic. And did it with every negativity in his face. And think that is something worth honoring
And I reached out to Kim because I love her style, I love her energy and I have been following her blog long enough to know that she lives for doing an all black outfit. She was super nice, because I came to her last minute and she didn’t hesitate! #totalwin
Soooo now that we got the sentimental and history part out
the way, on too my outfit!
Outfit Details
Top: Target
Skirt: Strawberry
Belt: Dots
Booties: Torrid
Headwrap: Forever 21
Bag: Kmart
Coat: Catherines (Christmas gift)
I must say that I am rather proud of myself, for doing my 1st
headwrap. I’ve always wanted to do one, but I have so much hair that I thought
it would look funny. But nope I love it. Pretty much all these pieces you’ve
seen before, but this the 1st time I’m putting it all together.

I’m super excited to finally be wearing my bow suspender
tights. I got them in the mail about 3 weeks ago and haven’t been able to wear
them.  And I thought what a perfect time
to. They are super comfortable. However, my one issue is that the “control top”
part can easily be seen. Now that could just be my thighs. But other than that,
I love them.
My photos taken by Julia
I hope you liked the outfit, and this one goes out to
Malcolm X and the entire Shabazz family. And a huge thank you to Kim, check out her outfit below, and be sure to follow her blog and subscribe to her awesome videos on Youtube (if you’re not…but you TOTALLY should be)
Until next time loves!

Happy soon to be Friday. I just had to do this post because, the other day I had a rather frustrating day at work and I knew the only thing that would make it better would be to play a little dress when I got home. So before I left the showroom, I pulled this really great Henrik Vibskov dress/tunic thingy lol. I knew immediately what I wanted to wear with it. I have’t done an all black ensemble in quite awhile so I thought what the hell, lets do it.
I paired it with my suspender tights…clearly you all know I love them, and my new favorite booties from I’m actually totally in love with them. I threw on some jewelry from some of the other clients in our showroom and here’s what I got.

Outfit Details:
Dress/Tunic: Henril Vibskov
Suspender tights:
Jewelry: Bjorg, Priestess, Maria Black

Black & Red & Vintage

Hey loves, It’s friday and I felt it was so imperative that I look cute lol I just thought it was appropriate. And I wanted a reason to wear this really awesome skirt I got from Unique thrift. I’ve been noticing lately that I’m really into printed vintage skirts. And to be honest I almost didn’t buy this skirt, my besties talked me into it. And thank god they did cause I love it.

The top is a DIY idea. I really wanted a sleeveless turtleneck top (imagine that right lol) so when I couldn’t find one I made one. and my shoes I got from Goodwill. The one I like to go to is like a mile away from a Target. And I noticed that a lot of old things that Target doesn’t they give to the good will. Total win!

Outfit Details:
Skirt: Unique Thrift
Top: DIY from Target
Shoes: Goodwill by way of Target
Bag: Gucci (Christmas gift)

For real though can we get into how fantastic the print is on this skirt!

I’m gone with the wind fabulous lol

Yea I was kinda cold taking this pics. but I do it for yall!

Until next time loves!

Blue Aztec

Happy New Year loves! I hope you all had an awesome new years and rang in the new year over the top but safe and responsible! So now that we got that out the way, let’s hope into the 1st look of 2013 *dancing around the room!* lol
I did a little shopping over the holiday time, and couldn’t wait to wear my new stuff. I am proud to say that I actually planned out this outfit, and it actually worked lol.

Yes I had to rock it with my new coat.My mommy got it for me for Christmas. Moms always knows things, cause I was in need a new coat. It is super comfortable and great length and I feel all warm and cozy in it.

Outfit Details:
Dress: Asos
Shoes: Justfab
Belt/Earrings: Dots
Bag: Call it Spring
Coat: Cathrine’s (christmas gift)

I thought this Aztec dress from Asos was great for this time of the year. It is freezing up here in Jersey, as it should be (it is ALL THE WAY January lol) The length is great, I love the sleeves and super comfortable. I typically wear a size 18 but i got this dress in 16 and it fits great.

As for my shoes, I think they are one of the bigger surprises. I got them from Just Fab, and in the past I haven’t been to excited with their shoes. They would have some great styles but the fit would suck. But these booties and AWESOME! And they are relatively comfortable. the small studded spikes are just perfect to go from a dress like this, to a more edgy outfit.

I punched up the black and white look with a few pops blue and one of my favorite bags from Call it Spring.

Until next time loves.

Closing 2012’s closet…A Pledge to Myself

I know the title may be a little misleading lol but as we all get ready to ring in 2013, I know a lot of folks are making resolutions and promises to themselves for the coming year. I’m no different but I don’t want to make a resolution. I want to make a pledge to myself as person to do things bigger and better in 2013. I am excited for the things that I have planned for the blog in the coming year and cant wait to get a jump on things.

2012 has been a year of ups and downs for me, in professional life, my personal life and my blogging life. And even though I at the time I couldn’t see the silver lining in the negatives, I know God had/has a plan for me, and I’m doing my best to trust in him and follow the path he is laying out for me.

As time unfolds, I will be letting you all in on so new things going on with the blog, and I hope you loves with come along for the ride with me! So as ATGC closes the 2012 closet, I hope you all ready to open 2013 with me and all the craziness that I come with! I love you all thank you for your continued support and love. And together lets make this movement of not letting the number on our clothes tag dictate our fabulous we are! Until next time.

2013 Pledge to myself

As I embark on a new year, new and exciting ideas and things will take shape. I know that with change comes positive and negative outcomes. And I know that not everyday will be the brightest. But I am prepared to walk by faith, try new things, meet new people, and open myself up to what may come.  I pledge;

-Not just lose weight but to become a healthier me
-Become a better daughter to the woman who means the most to me
-Bring quality content to all those who support me and the A Thick Girl’s Closet
-Put all that I can into my future career
-To become financially stable and MORE independent

These things I pledge to myself, and with strength and push from God I know that this can and will be done. The opportunities that may come will be ones that I prepared for and some that I am not. But whatever happens I know that it is for the betterment of me.
